Monster Hunter Wilds: A Deep Dive into the Starting Equipment
Many Monster Hunter players cite crafting equipment from hunted monsters as a major draw. The satisfaction of a complete armor set and matching weapon, earned through persistent hunts, is a core experience. This equipment design philosophy has been central to the series since its inception: conquer monsters, then wield their power through crafted gear.
In an IGN interview, Executive Director and Art Director Kaname Fujioka discussed this concept: "While our designs have broadened, we used to focus on the idea that Rathalos equipment makes you look like Rathalos." Wilds introduces new monsters, each with unique and visually striking equipment. Rompopolo, a mad scientist-themed monster, for example, has head armor resembling a plague doctor's mask (see the hunt video below).
However, the developers emphasize the importance of the starting equipment. Fujioka states, "I designed all 14 starting weapon types from scratch—a first for me. Previously, starting weapons were primitive. But our protagonist is a chosen hunter; plain weapons wouldn't fit. I wanted even the starting equipment to feel impactful."

Director Yuya Tokuda adds, "In World, weapon designs were consistent but customized based on materials. In Wilds, each weapon has a unique design." This reflects the narrative: the hunter is experienced, tasked with investigating the Forbidden Lands. The starting armor, the "Hope" series, is equally detailed.

The Hope set, a deep emerald green, forms a hooded long coat when complete. Fujioka explains the design challenge: "We gave more attention to the Hope series than any other equipment. Previous games had separate upper and lower body armor; we couldn't create a coat. But I wanted a flowing hooded coat. We achieved this by investing significant resources. While players will discover diverse equipment, we wanted the Hope series to be subtly stylish, not overly flashy."
Starting with such meticulously crafted equipment is a luxury. The 14 starting weapons and the Hope series are designed to reflect a seasoned, elite hunter. We eagerly anticipate examining their detail in the final game.
