Onimusha: Way of the Sword Stays True to the Series
Not an Open-World Soulslike

Marking the franchise's first mainline entry in two decades, Onimusha: Way of the Sword deliberately avoids contemporary soulslike elements and open-world design. Director Satoru Nihei explained the team's approach in a June 19 Automaton interview.
Nihei clarified their design philosophy, stating: "We consciously rejected modern trends - this isn't an open-world experience nor does it feature punishing soulslike mechanics."

The development team prioritized accessibility and satisfying combat. "Our core objective was perfecting the visceral experience of blade combat," Nihei emphasized, noting the game welcomes both action veterans and newcomers.
During a March Famitsu interview, Nihei and Producer Akihito Kadowaki confirmed the game follows the series' linear progression tradition. Kadowaki estimates 20+ hours of content, likely earning Japan's strict CERO Z (18+) rating.
Capcom Spent 2 Years To Get Toshiro Mifune's Likeness

Since development began in 2020, the team prioritized authentic samurai representation, particularly for protagonist Musashi Miyamoto. The character pays homage to legendary actor Toshiro Mifune, with Capcom securing his likeness rights in a two-year process.
Nihei revealed to Game Watch on June 16 his immediate vision for the character: "When conceptualizing a battle-worn young samurai, Mifune's iconic presence became our definitive reference."

Mifune's connection to samurai cinema runs deep, having famously portrayed Miyamoto Musashi in the 1950s Samurai Trilogy. Capcom previously honored this legacy by using his likeness in Netflix's 2023 Onimusha anime, demonstrating their commitment to authenticity.
With its focused samurai combat and cinematic influences, Onimusha: Way of the Sword targets a 2026 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. For ongoing updates, follow our coverage below!
