Denuvo Executive Responds to Community Criticism Over Anti-Piracy Software
Denuvo Confronts Performance Complaints and False Information

In a recent interview, Denuvo product manager Andreas Ullmann addressed the significant backlash the anti-piracy company has faced. He characterized some community reactions as "very toxic," arguing that many concerns, particularly regarding performance, are based on misinformation and confirmation bias.
Denuvo's anti-tamper DRM is widely adopted by major publishers to protect new releases from piracy, with titles like *Final Fantasy 16* among recent users. However, gamers frequently accuse the DRM of harming game performance, often pointing to anecdotal reports or unofficial benchmarks that show improvements after its removal. Ullmann refuted these claims, noting that cracked game versions still contain Denuvo's original code.
"The cracks do not remove our protection," Ullmann told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. "Additional code is layered on top of the cracked version—executing over our own code and causing even more processes to run. Technically, a cracked version cannot be faster than the legitimate, uncracked version."

Asked whether Denuvo can negatively affect performance, he responded, "No, and I believe we've clarified this point in our Discord FAQ." He did acknowledge there have been "valid cases," such as with *Tekken 7*, where Denuvo DRM was linked to noticeable performance problems.
This statement, however, appears at odds with the company's official Anti-Tamper Q&A, which asserts, "Anti-Tamper has no perceptible effect on game performance and is not responsible for any crashes in genuine game executables."
Denuvo's Damaged Reputation and the Short-Lived Discord Server

Ullmann, a self-described avid gamer, recognized that players often struggle to see the immediate value of DRM. He emphasized the substantial benefits for developers, citing research indicating effective DRM can boost revenue by around 20% by preventing early piracy. He suggested that misinformation spread within piracy communities has deepened misunderstandings and urged players to acknowledge Denuvo's role in supporting the industry.
"Large publishers are seeking ways to protect their investments," Ullmann explained. "While this may not offer an instant advantage to players, the long-term benefits are clear: a more successful game receives more updates and additional content and is more likely to spawn sequels. These are the real advantages we provide to the average player."
Despite the company's attempts to clarify its position, Denuvo continues to face strong opposition from gamers. On October 15, 2024, Denuvo launched a public Discord server to encourage direct discussion with the community, aiming to "open up our communication... to your voices."
The effort backfired within two days. The main chat was flooded with users posting memes critical of DRM, complaints about performance, and other negative messages. The sheer volume overwhelmed Denuvo's small moderation team, forcing them to disable chat permissions and switch the server to a read-only mode. Similar criticism continues to populate the company's social media posts.
Even after this failed outreach attempt, Ullmann remains committed to the goal of better communication. "You have to start somewhere," he remarked. "This is the beginning of our initiative to be more present. We aim to engage on Discord initially and later expand to platforms like Reddit and Steam forums, participating in discussions with official accounts."

It remains to be seen whether Denuvo's push for transparency will change public perception. The company's strategy to steer the conversation appears focused on fostering a more balanced dialogue between players and developers. As Ullmann put it, "This is precisely what we seek: honest, constructive conversations with people about our shared passion for gaming."
