Epic Games' Ambitious Metaverse Vision: Unreal Engine 6 and Interoperability

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has unveiled an ambitious plan to create a unified metaverse using the next generation Unreal Engine 6. This vision involves connecting various game ecosystems, including Fortnite and potentially Roblox and Minecraft, into a single, interoperable space.
A Shared Metaverse and Economy

In a recent interview, Sweeney emphasized the creation of an interoperable metaverse with a shared marketplace and assets. He highlighted Epic's substantial financial resources, stating that the company is well-positioned to execute this long-term strategy. This involves integrating the high-end capabilities of Unreal Engine with the user-friendly interface of Unreal Editor for Fortnite, resulting in the development of Unreal Engine 6 over several years.
Unreal Engine 6: A Foundation for Interoperability

Sweeney envisions Unreal Engine 6 as a platform allowing developers to create games once and deploy them across multiple platforms. This would facilitate the interoperable metaverse by creating a shared technological foundation. He cited the collaboration with Disney as an example of this interoperability, aiming to extend this model to other game developers, from AAA studios to indie developers and Fortnite creators.
While discussions with Roblox and Microsoft haven't begun, Sweeney anticipates future collaborations. He explained that the core concept centers around player engagement and the value of long-term digital assets. An interoperable economy, he believes, will foster player trust and increase spending on digital goods.

Epic EVP Saxs Persson echoed this sentiment, suggesting a federated approach where players can seamlessly transition between games like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite. He highlighted the importance of player interaction and choice in extending playtime and enjoyment. Both executives emphasized that this vision builds upon the success of Fortnite's existing ecosystem and acknowledges the diverse landscape of game publishers. The goal is not total domination, but rather the creation of a more interconnected and engaging gaming experience.
