Microsoft has announced a significant reduction in its workforce, cutting approximately 3% of its total employees. According to CNBC, as of June 2024, Microsoft had 228,000 employees, meaning around 6,000 staff members are affected by these layoffs. The company is focusing on streamlining its management structure across all teams to enhance efficiency and adaptability in a rapidly evolving market.
A Microsoft spokesperson emphasized the necessity of these changes, stating, "We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace." This move underscores Microsoft's commitment to maintaining a competitive edge.
IGN has reached out to Microsoft to inquire whether these layoffs impact its video game division. In a related development, Microsoft made further cuts to its gaming business in September 2024, letting go of an additional 650 employees. This follows the earlier dismissal of 1,900 staff members in the same year, bringing the total number of layoffs in the gaming sector to 2,550 since the acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion in 2023. As part of these cuts, Microsoft closed notable studios such as Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks and Redfall developer Arkane Austin.
In a conversation with IGN in June 2024, Xbox boss Phil Spencer addressed the challenging decisions he faces, saying, "I have to run a sustainable business inside the company and grow, and that means sometimes I have to make hard decisions that frankly are not decisions I love, but decisions that somebody needs to go make." This statement highlights the tough choices leaders must make to ensure long-term viability and growth.
