沉默主角在现代RPG中的挑战：两位资深开发者探讨《勇者斗恶龙》和《Metaphor: ReFantazio》
长期以来，沉默主角一直是角色扮演游戏（RPG）的常见设定。然而，随着游戏技术的进步和游戏开发环境的演变，这种设定也面临着新的挑战。Square Enix的《勇者斗恶龙》系列制作人堀井雄二和Atlus即将推出的RPG游戏《Metaphor: ReFantazio》总监桥野桂，近期在《Metaphor: ReFantazio Atlas Brand 35th Anniversary Edition》小册子中的一次访谈片段中，就这一话题进行了深入探讨。
堀井雄二认为，《勇者斗恶龙》系列的沉默主角是一种“象征性主角”，玩家可以将自己的情感和反应投射到角色身上，从而增强沉浸感。在早期游戏简陋的画面下，沉默主角更容易实现，也更符合游戏设计理念。“但随着游戏画面越来越逼真，如果主角只是站在那里，就会显得像个傻子，”堀井雄二笑着说道。
他提到自己最初的梦想是成为漫画家，对讲故事的热爱和对电脑的兴趣最终促使他进入游戏行业。《勇者斗恶龙》的诞生源于他的热情，以及通过与游戏Boss互动来推进故事的设定。“《勇者斗恶龙》主要通过与城镇居民的对话来展开剧情，叙事成分很少。故事是通过对话来构建的，这正是游戏的乐趣所在。”
然而，在现代游戏中，逼真的画面可能会让缺乏反应的沉默主角显得格格不入。在FC时代，《勇者斗恶龙》简化的画面让玩家更容易想象主角的情感，但在画面和音效日益精细的今天，沉默主角的刻画变得越来越困难。“这就是为什么，随着游戏越来越逼真，《勇者斗恶龙》中那种类型的主角越来越难表现。这在未来也将是一个挑战，”堀井雄二总结道。
与《勇者斗恶龙》不同，《Metaphor: ReFantazio》将采用全语音主角。桥野桂对堀井雄二的创作理念表示赞赏，他认为《勇者斗恶龙》非常注重玩家在特定情境下的感受。“我认为《勇者斗恶龙》非常重视玩家在特定情境下的感受，即使是与普通城镇居民的对话也是如此。我觉得游戏始终以玩家为中心，思考着当有人说出某些话时会产生什么样的情感。”
