inZOI's innovative karma system has the potential to transform thriving cities into eerie ghost towns, adding a unique layer of depth to the life simulation genre. This fascinating feature was highlighted in the latest issue of PC Gamer Magazine, where inZOI Director Hyungjun Kim discussed the game's mechanics and its upcoming early access release.
inZOI Cities Can Be Overrun By Ghosts

New Zois Cannot Be Born If There Are Too Many Ghosts

In inZOI, if the number of ghosts becomes too high, it can drastically alter the city's status, potentially turning it into a ghost town. According to Director Hyungjun Kim, "Each time a Zoi performs an action, karma points are accumulated." He further explained, "Upon death, a karma evaluation determines the state of the soul. If the score is too low, the Zoi becomes a ghost and must redeem their karma points before they can transition into a new life."
Kim emphasized the importance of managing the karma of the Zois, stating, "If too many ghosts appear in the city, new Zois cannot be born, nor can families be created, placing the responsibility on players to manage the karma of the Zois within the city." This system adds a layer of complexity and responsibility for players, who must balance the karma to prevent their cities from becoming ghost towns.
However, Kim clarified that the system is not about enforcing only 'good' actions. He noted, "Life cannot be divided simply into good and bad; every life has its own meaning and value." He encouraged players to explore inZOI’s karma system to "create diverse events and stories, while exploring the many meanings of life."
inZOI Director Has Great Respect for the Legacy The Sims Built

While inZOI may be seen as a competitor to The Sims, Director Hyungjun Kim views it differently. He stated, "We see Inzoi not as a competitor to The Sims, but rather as another option that fans of this genre can enjoy." Kim expressed his respect for The Sims, saying, "We have great respect for the legacy The Sims has built over the years, since we know that reaching that much depth in such a short period of time is no easy task."
Kim highlighted inZOI's unique features, explaining, "Inzoi is designed to allow players to freely shape the life they desire, using various creative tools." These tools include a realistic visual style powered by Unreal Engine 5, in-depth customization features, and AI-driven creative tools. Kim hopes that players will "explore these features to bring their imaginations to life, become their own protagonists and live in those worlds."
