Shadow of the Colossus Movie Adaptation: An Update from Director Andy Muschietti
Director Andy Muschietti (known for It and The Flash) recently provided an update on the long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. Initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009, the project has seen several delays. While game director Fumito Ueda is involved, the film's development has been protracted, with Josh Trank previously attached before dropping out due to scheduling conflicts.
The announcement comes alongside Sony's recent reveal of other game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers movie, a Horizon Zero Dawn film, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project.
Muschietti, speaking on Radio TU’s La Baulera del Coso, confirmed the Shadow of the Colossus film is not abandoned. He attributed the delays to factors beyond creative control, specifically citing the challenges of balancing the project's budget with the IP's popularity and scale. He also mentioned the existence of multiple scripts, indicating ongoing development and refinement of the narrative.

While Muschietti isn't a "big gamer," he considers Shadow of the Colossus a "masterpiece" and has played it multiple times. The film aims to capture the game's unique atmosphere and iconic colossi, a challenge echoed in other games like the 2024 title Dragon's Dogma 2, which shows the enduring influence of the original. The adaptation seeks to both satisfy existing fans and introduce new audiences to the game's captivating fantasy world, even with the high-definition remakes having concluded with the PlayStation 4 release in 2018. The legacy of Shadow of the Colossus, originally crafted by Ueda (now leading GenDesign, recently unveiling a new sci-fi game at The Game Awards 2024), continues its evolution.
