The highly anticipated survival horror shooter, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, achieved phenomenal success in its home country, Ukraine, causing a significant nationwide internet slowdown due to the sheer volume of simultaneous downloads.
A Nation-Wide Gaming Phenomenon
The game's November 20th launch overwhelmed Ukrainian internet infrastructure. Providers Tenet and Triolan reported drastically reduced internet speeds in the evening, directly attributing the issue to the massive influx of players downloading S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 concurrently. Triolan's Telegram statement, as translated, cited "increased load on the channels due to the massive interest in the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R." as the cause.
Even after successful downloads, many users experienced login and loading delays. The widespread internet disruption lasted for hours before resolving.
GSC Game World, the Ukrainian developer, expressed both pride and surprise at this unprecedented event. Creative director Mariia Grygorovych commented, "It was tough for the whole country, and the internet disruption was a negative, but at the same time, it was incredible!" She emphasized the positive impact, stating, "For us, the most important thing is that we brought a little joy to people in Ukraine."
Record-Breaking Sales Despite Challenges
The game's immense popularity is undeniable. Within just two days of its release, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 surpassed 1 million copies sold globally, despite known performance issues and bugs. Its success was particularly strong in Ukraine.
GSC Game World, operating from Kyiv and Prague, faced numerous challenges, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which caused multiple launch delays. However, the studio persevered, releasing the game in November. They remain dedicated to addressing the game's technical issues through ongoing patch releases, with a third major patch deployed recently.
