Stealth and Puzzles Enhance Gameplay

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: Melee Combat Takes Center StageIn a recent interview with PC Gamer, MachineGames' design director and creative director detailed the game's gameplay mechanics. Inspired by their work on titles like Wolfenstein and Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, the developers emphasized hand-to-hand combat, improvised weaponry, and stealth.

The team explained that Indiana Jones isn't known for his gunplay, making a shooter-style game inappropriate. Instead, the game will feature visceral melee combat, utilizing everyday objects like pots, pans, and even musical instruments as improvised weapons. This approach aims to capture Indy's resourceful and often humorous approach to combat.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: Melee Combat Takes Center StageBeyond combat, players will navigate diverse environments. The game blends linear and open areas, offering both guided progression and opportunities for exploration. Some open areas provide significant player agency, allowing for multiple solutions to challenges, similar to immersive sims. Stealth mechanics, including a unique "social stealth" system utilizing disguises, will also play a crucial role in navigating these environments.

Disguises will be available in many locations, allowing players to blend in and access restricted areas. This adds a layer of strategic depth to gameplay.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: Melee Combat Takes Center StageIn a previous interview with Inverse, the game director highlighted the deliberate decision to downplay gunplay. The team prioritized other aspects of gameplay, such as hand-to-hand combat, exploration, and traversal. This design choice reflects a commitment to delivering a truly authentic Indiana Jones experience.

The game will also include challenging puzzles, with varying difficulty levels to ensure accessibility while offering rewarding complexity for seasoned puzzle solvers. Some particularly intricate puzzles will be optional.
