The 2025 State of the Game Industry Report
PC Dominates: 80% of Developers Target This Platform

GDC's January 21, 2025 report highlighted the remarkable statistic: a full 80% of game developers are currently developing for PC. This represents a substantial 14% increase from the 66% reported in 2024. While the exact reasons remain unclear, the report suggests the rising popularity of Valve's Steam Deck may be a contributing factor. Interestingly, although the Steam Deck wasn't a listed platform option, 44% of respondents who selected "Other" specified the Steam Deck as a target platform.

Last year's report already identified the PC as the dominant platform, despite the emergence of UGC platforms like Roblox and Minecraft, and the anticipation surrounding the Switch 2 (formerly known as the Nintendo Switch successor). This continued dominance isn't new; the trend has steadily grown from 56% in 2020. The continued shift towards PC development suggests an even larger library of PC games in the future. However, the upcoming release of the Switch 2, with its promised graphical and performance improvements, could potentially influence this trend.
Live Service Games: A Mixed Bag for AAA Developers

The report also revealed that one-third (33%) of AAA developers are currently working on live-service games. Expanding the scope to all respondents, 16% are currently developing live-service titles, with an additional 13% expressing interest. Conversely, 41% showed no interest, citing concerns such as declining player interest, creative stagnation, predatory practices, microtransactions, and burnout.
GDC emphasized the issue of "market oversaturation" within the live-service game sector, highlighting the difficulty developers face in maintaining sustainable player bases. The recent closure of Ubisoft's XDefiant after only six months serves as a stark example of this challenge.
Geographic Representation: A Note on Potential Bias

A PC Gamer article on January 23, 2025, pointed out a significant underrepresentation of developers from various countries in the GDC report. Nearly 70% of respondents were from Western countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia), with notable absences including China (a major player in the mobile gaming market) and Japan. This skewed representation might introduce bias into the report's findings, potentially not fully reflecting the global state of the game industry.
